MHAGC endorses the Illinois Children’s
Mental Health Act of 2003

The Mental Health Association of Greater Chicago is proud to volunteer its time and energy, along with other educators, clinicians, leaders of non-profits, and Illinois public officials, to insure that the purpose of this Act is addressed and implemented throughout Illinois.

MHAGC is actively engaged on two committees of the Partnership:

  • School Policies and Standards Committee
  • Professional Development Sub-committee

Section 15 (b), School District Policy Provision, requires in part that every school district incorporate social and emotional development into their educational program, with the intention of responding to children with social, emotional and mental health problems.

MHAGC’s Mental Health Awareness in Education (MHAE) program was developed over the course of two years to help non-clinical school personnel deal with adolescent mental illness. The MHAE program has proven timely, supporting the purpose of this Act. Using the MHAE tools, evaluated effective throughout the state, participants are trained to identify, but not diagnose, the emotional issues of students, when to refer, what to say and what not to say.
